“Organizations
who use MLS systems tolerate no
leakage at all. The defense community, which
includes the military services, intelligence
organizations, related government agencies
and supporting enterprises, cannot easily
recover from certain information leaks.
Stealth systems aren't stealthy if the
targets know what to look for, and
surveillance systems don't see things if the
targets know what camouflage to use. Such
failures can't always be corrected just by
spending more money. Even worse, a system's
weakness might not be detected until after a
diplomatic or military disaster reveals it.”

Abstract: |
The purpose of
this paper is to discuss infrastructure
simplification (IS) and multi-level security
(MLS), their importance in supporting government
initiatives for sharing and securing data, and
how the pSeries AIX 5L platform with Argus
PitBull enhancements addresses these
initiatives.
The paper is
structured in two sections. The first section
discusses the current context in which IS
initiatives are being implemented and how the
evolution of IT security in government has
finally established MLS capability as a
requirement for many government applications.
The second section presents how the pSeries AIX
5L platform with the Argus PitBull Foundation
enhancement provides a solution for government
agencies seeking the financial and systems
control advantage of IS, as well as the security
and flexibility provided by MLS. This paper will
not provide a complete assessment of MLS, which
has already been completed in “Multi-Level
Security Strategies for the Federal Government,”
